TRAINING DAY TWO
The wind has picked up significantly and is fully giving Antarctica vibes for us today. Devon says that means it’s the perfect day to practice setting up the tent. But first, we need some breakfast.
Going through our six dozen eggs pretty quickly
Maggie, Mark and Devon pack up their gear and heads toward Finsevatnet where they can enjoy the maximum force of the wind gusts across the expanse.
Once Devon finds the right spot, the team stops to add their outer layer so they can stay warm before they begin to unload the equipment from the pulks. Because they’re generating a lot of heat while they are skiing, they use just a light layer to provide protection from the wind without getting too hot. But, as soon as they stop, it’s important to add the extra gear so they can keep their body heat in and not cool down too quickly. In the extreme temperatures of Antarctica, this step is critical.
Oh, and shoutout to our gear partners Rab, Aclima, and Teko, with footwear from Baffin Boots and Intuition liners. We couldn’t do any of this without their help.
The home-away-from-home Barents tent for Mark, Maggie and Devon over 60+ days in Antarctica
And tada! The finished product, after only T-10 minutes or so, although Devon wants the team to cut the setup time down by at least half for the actual expedition. Now it’s time for everyone to get cozy and get out of the wind for a few minutes!
It’s always time for Norwegian chocolate, especially Kvik Lunch. It’s surprisingly roomy in here!
